To their credit, they’ve done a lot to make blatant homophobia taboo within the mainstream media, but now that that’s been more or less accomplished, they’ve served their purpose in that arena…

If they really gave a shit about how gays and lesbians were depicted, they’d be working to reduce homophobia among religious organizations…in African-American popular culture…in the international media…

But, like the Human Rights Campaign, they take advantage of people (both straight and gay) who do give a shit, and then spend that donation money to host banquets that 95% of the community they claim to be serving can’t afford to attend…and to subsidize the overeducated and underqualified members of said community by paying them to plan these events, or to churn out fatuous press releases…

Meanwhile, the majority of this country (both geographically and numerically) isn’t nearly as tolerant as the media…for example, Austin may be Austin, but it is still Texas…and once you leave the Mopac/183/71/IH-35 bubble, all that famed tolerance suddenly disappears…

One of the things Brüno points out (brilliantly, i might add) is that many Americans remain rabidly homophobic…and that little progress has been made in rural areas and smaller towns/cities…home to 21% of Americans…

21% of 300 million is 63 million…take 10% of that…that’s a lot of people not getting to benefit from mainstream society’s newfound tolerance…

Maybe that hit a little too close to home for GLAAD…
